Joseph’s Coat is a Skyspace created by internationally renowned artist, James Turrell. The permanent installation is a “gathering place” for contemplation, sustained experience and conversation. In doing so, the artist changes the context in which you view the sky and can radically change your perception of the color of the sky and its spatial relation to you. No matter when you enjoy the Skyspace -- sunset, during the day, rain or shine -- you will have a unique experience. Thursday through Sunday evenings. Divine Michelangelo & DaVinci Side by Side Exhibition

10:00 am to 5:00 pm Daily - Bradenton Auditorium, 1005 1st Ave W, Bradenton - 941-209-1236

Hot on the heels of the Machines exhibit, Leonardo DaVinci returns to the Bradenton Auditorium with the Florida premier of Divine Michelangelo and DaVinci Side by Side. Showcasing works by both masters, guests are invited to step into the world of competing genius, where titans of art and science clashed in their quest for greatness. Four of Michelangelo’s great sculptures are on display, not as artistic renderings or approximations, but as authentic casts of the original works authorized by the National Academy of Castmaking in Florence, Italy, which maintains original casts in case of damage to the original. Michaelangelo’s famous Rome Pieta is on display, as is the unfinished and ambitious Florentine Pieta. A casting of the head from his 17-foot tall David allows viewers an up-close look at the artist’s detail and precision, revealing individual marks and chips, the brushstrokes of a sculptor. For the DaVinci fans, many of the machines are back and available for inspection and manipulation, but are now joined by an array of the artist’s paintings. From the famous Mona Lisa to his Portrait of an Unknown Woman to the final St. John the Baptist, DaVinci’s mark on the world of painting is all the more remarkable for the scarcity of surviving completed works. Using licensed digital images from the Museum of Leonardo DaVinci in Florence, Italy, printed to the exact dimensions of the originals, it’s as close as one can get to the real thing without going to Italy. “The quality is first generation, so you can’t beat that, and you can get up close,” said curator Mark Rodgers, who travels with the pieces on loan from Florence, leading tours and ensuring the work is cared for. “But the biggest thing is to be able to see all of these in one spot. 80% of the people that come to this exhibit will probably never get to see these in-person. That’s why this is so incredible.” Also on display are selections from Michelangelo’s tondos, smaller decorative reliefs sculpted for individual patrons, recreations from the Sistine Chapel and even a bust of Leonardo DaVinci by local sculptor Steve Eingorn. The exhibit will be in the Bradenton Auditorium through April 30. Guests are encouraged to bring headphones and listen to an audio tour from Rodgers through their smartphones. $11.95 to $15.95

Oddity Gallery Presents: Frazetta in May

Oddity Tattoo Studio & Gallery, 1778 Main Street, Sarasota - 941-955-6246

Frazetta in May Oddity Tattoo presents the works of Frank Frazetta May 2nd-30th, 2015 / Opening Reception Saturday, May 2nd, 7-10pm If you are a fan of fantasy inspired art, comic books, or all things science fiction then you are surely familiar with the legacy that is Frank Frazetta. Frazetta has brought some of the most iconic fantasy world characters to life, including Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, and The Death Dealer, which is widely recognized from being featured as cover art for southern rock band Molly Hatchet’s self-titled debut album. The 1983 adventure-fantasy film Fire and Ice was co-produced by Frazetta himself, with the overall feel and design imitating his illustrative works. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez is set for production of a live action remake of Fire and Ice as an homage to the late artist, a friend of his whom he greatly admired. Oddity Tattoo Studio and Gallery takes great pride in being a part of presenting this exhibition. Owner Travis Franklin regards Frazetta as one of his earliest childhood idols, and describes him as being one of his biggest influences to date. “What inspired me as a young artist about [Frazetta’s] work at the time was the power in every painting,” explains Franklin. “The inflection in the poses, the flesh, the mood, the action, the beauty...the horror. Frazetta believed in the magic of creating, not formulas or a science. I am very grateful for this opportunity to house his works. As a young teen tattooing and oil painting I could have never dreamed this up”. Each weekend, Oddity will display authentic original pieces by Frank Frazetta for the public to enjoy. Each piece will showcase for one night only, a rotation of new originals each Saturday for the duration of the show. Sara Frazetta, the artist’s granddaughter, will be making guest appearances on these special nights. Guests will also have the exciting opportunity to take home their very own piece of the legacy, with merchandise available in the form of prints, t-shirts, books and more. Original sketches and signed lithographs will also be available throughout the length of the exhibition. The gallery’s opening reception, free and open to the public, takes place on Saturday, May 2nd at 7pm. Oddity Tattoo Studio & Gallery is located at 1778 Main Street, Sarasota, FL.
